smoothies…there are a million ways to make them. to be completely honest i’d rather not be healthy and just make mine with sherbet and fruit and maybe some frozen yogurt. however i’m trying to be healthier and trying to get some of my green veggies and make sure i’m getting enough protein too. so this is how i’m making smoothies right now.
i start with some silk fruit and protein. love this mixed berry flavor. i put about a cup of it in the blender. if i don’t have any of this then i use almond milk.
next i take a big handful or two of fresh spinach and add that.
i grind all of that up to make sure the spinach is finely blended.
next i add a scoop full of protein powder. i’ve been using this soy based protein powder from whole food for awhile. but any protein powder that you like will do. after i add the protein powder i let it all blend for a bit of time. i myself don’t like the chalky taste of protein powder and i’ve found if i blend it in the beginning it tastes better.
now comes the fruit…my favorite part! i’ve been experimenting with buying frozen fruit versus buying fresh fruit and freezing it myself. hands down keeping taste and cost in mind buying fresh fruit and freezing it myself is the best way to go. you can use any fruit you want and freeze bags of mixed fruit (one smoothie per bag) or freeze each kind of fruit in separate bags so you can change up your smoothie flavor.
i generally run the bag of frozen fruit under warm water to break up the pieces and add to the blender a few pieces at a time. when it gets too thick to blend i add a little water as necessary to get the consistency that i want. you can also add a little sweetener if you really like sweets…sometimes i add a little stevia or agave nectar.
and voila! you’re in green smoothie heaven. really the sky is the limit to what you put in your smoothie. i like to add freshly pressed juices (fruit and veggie), flax seed, and sometimes almonds.
what do you put in your smoothies? i’d love to have some new ideas on how to mix it up a little! happy friday.
